Panda cub growing quickly
12:51 p.m. PDT, August 31, 2012
SAN DIEGO -- The unnamed giant panda cub is healthy and growing, the San Diego Zoo reported Thursday, following the second examination of the little bear.
The cub, born July 29, weighed 2.2 pounds and had a full belly after nursing, according to the zoo. It weighed 1.5 pounds during its initial examination last week.
That first check lasted only three minutes but the one that took place early this morning was longer, because the mother and cub were comfortable, which stemmed from animal care staff performing tactile desensitization, veterinarian P.K. Robbins said.
"Each day, (animal care staff) go into the den and give the cub a gentle stroke,'' Robbins said. "So, during the exam they did the same sort of gentle stroke around the cub's head and that is a reassuring thing for the cub, makes it feel at home, makes it feel safe, and that really enhances our exam because the cub is quiet and at ease."
The cub's gender has not been determined.
The cub and its mother, Bai Yun, will remain in their den for a couple of more months. A webcam in the den is accessible to the public on the Internet.
The endangered giant pandas are on loan to the U.S. from their native China for research purposes. When offspring turn 3 years old, China has a right to request their return.
