YA'AN CITY, Sichuan Province, China (CNN) -- Five primary school children had a special International Children's Day ahead of time by taking care of giant pandas at southwest China's Sichuan Province on Thursday.

Early Thursday morning, the five pupils from Chengdu Experimental Primary School arrived at the Bifengxia Giant Panda Protection and Research Center in the city of Ya'an, with the accompany of their parents. The children were excited to have the chance to stay in close contact with the giant pandas.

After putting on protective suits, the kids entered the giant mammals enclosure, trying to learn taking care of four baby giant pandas aged between one to one and a half years.

They first tried to feed the pandas with bamboo shoots. The baby pandas soon got used to these new feeders.

"They fed the pandas in the right way, just like what we do -- pass the bamboo shoots to them and pat them," said a feeder at the conservation center.

After feeding the pandas, the young breeders helped clean the panda enclosure.

The unique experience offered the kids a new and special meaning for their festival.

"By learning more about giant panda and taking care of them as volunteers, the children will bring the idea of loving animals and protecting environment to their families, and then to the whole society," said Ye Lei, a teacher of Chengdu Experimental Primary School.
