Yang Yang and Fu Hu at Zoo Vienna on August 13, 2012.
Fu Hu has a weird habit when it comes to eating. The bamboo for pandas in Vienna is provided in large amounts several times a day and it is dropped everywhere. Yet, having eaten his bamboo stick, he won't just reach for another one. Instead, he will touch his mother's paw, open it and check what's inside, what she has there. If she's currently holding any piece of bamboo, he'll take it away from her and start chewing at it. He will look for his own bamboo only after he's checked that she doesn't have anything in her paw. He will do that even if it's clear that her paw is empty.

Second exam of San Diego Zoo's giant panda cub.
Animal care staff was able to take longer with the exam this morning as both cub and mother remained calm throughout the brief separation. Veterinarians noted a full belly on the cub, who had just finished nursing before the exam. The cub weighs more than a kilogram (2.2 pounds) and seems to be developing normally.

- Bai Yun in San Diego either bit or clawed (I can't remember which now) one of her keepers some years ago; the gate wasn't secured properly so Bai Yun wandered into her enclosure and was surprised by the human there. The "attack" was a startle response, not aggression. It's happened at a couple other zoos, same thing. It doesn't happen much and when it does it's almost always carelessness (or stupidity like the 3 guys you mentioned). Pandas prefer to run away rather than attack anyone.
That's true yes! I remember that. I think the keeper's leg was hurt, but thank god nothing too bad happened. I agree, I don't think pandas in general will purposely attack humans just to hurt them. There will probably be a reason behind it (like them feeling threatened, being scared, protecting their cubs, etc). Also, pandas have big claws and teeth, so even if they don't "attack", they can still harm you.
What I mean is, I wouldn't describe pandas as violent, but eventually they are wild animals and they can seriously hurt you.
- have pandas ever been known to be violent?
(I'm deleting old messages, so sorry for the late response.)
Pandas definitely can be violent yes. Just because they look cute doesn't mean they are cute ;). They are wild animals, and when they feel threatened they will attack.
I don't know a lot of stories of pandas attacking humans, just one. (Or three actually, but involving the same panda in some zoo in China.) I don't know exactly what happened anymore, the story is somewhere on my blog though, but basically there were some incidents of people climbing into the pandas' enclosure (it happened three times). So yeah, the panda attacked those people obviously. I wouldn't call that violence though, just enormous stupidity of the people who did that. As far as I can remember the three men did all survive the attacks.

The cub and its mother Bai Yun will remain in the den for several months, where they can be observed by the public on the San Diego Zoo's live Panda Cam sandiegozoo.org/pandacam.

Second exam of San Diego Zoo's cub.
"The cub is healthy and appears to have all its paws and claws where they should be," said P.K. Robbins, D.V.M., veterinarian at the San Diego Zoo. "This year, animal care staff started doing some tactile desensitization. Each day, [animal care staff] go into the den and give the cub a gentile stroke. So, during the exam they did the same sort of gentle stroke around the cub's head and that is a reassuring thing for the cub, makes it feel at home, makes it feel safe, and that really enhances our exam because the cub is quiet and at ease."
