Giant panda Shin Shin resumed breast-feeding her newborn cub Monday morning at Ueno Zoo after the male cub was returned to her from an incubator, a Tokyo zoo official said.

As it was uncertain if the cub had been fully fed, he was returned to the incubator 6½ hours later as a precaution, the official said.

Shin Shin began breast-feeding the cub after it cried, indicating she will be able to raise the cub properly.

The cub was born Thursday and Shin Shin breast-fed it frequently before she stopped carrying it and started eating bamboo sprouts late Friday night. As the cub was found lying away from Shin Shin, zoo staff warmed the baby panda before returning it to its mother. But Shin Shin did not pick the cub up, so it was moved to an incubator early Saturday. The cub was confirmed male the same day.

The staff will bring the cub to Shin Shin again Tuesday and continue monitoring them.

The cub is the first to be born at Japan's oldest zoo in 24 years and the first to be born there through natural breeding.
