What goes into making 'Panda Bread'?
There are lots of different names for the grain-filled loaves that we see being given to pandas in China and other zoos around world. The panda bases in China originated this recipe to help provide more nutrients and vitamins for their captive pandas. The recipe may vary in each location.
I know of one base outside of China that also makes the bread for their pandas and that is the Adelaide Zoo in Australia where FuNi and Wang Wang live. They also did a video about how they made their panda cakes and I have included it below also.
As a part of the Earthwatch trip that I was on in China we were taught how to make the bread that the pandas love to eat. Here is a short video of the process. I have often wondered why other zoos don't make use of the high in nutrient meal for their pandas.
It is quite a process at the base, with ovens for drying, baking, a separate room each for grain storage and dryer, the grain grinder machine and the preparation room. But the bases do have quite a few more pandas to feed. Its good to see Adelaide uses it for their pandas, maybe other zoos can contact them for a way to set it up for themselves.
I would think it might reduce the amount of fresh bamboo that needs to be harvested to feed the pandas, but that is just another of probably a thousand questions I wanted to ask but never got around to!
