Chinese experts artificially inseminated a female panda at the Chengdu Giant Panda Breeding Centre in China’s Sichuan Province.

State-run Chinese media reported Wednesday this was after Grade, a 12-year-old giant panda, showed little interest in her male partners.

[Chen Min, Chengdu Giant Panda Breeding Centre Staff]:
"These male pandas seem to like her a lot and have been waiting around her a lot. Sometimes they don't even eat, they just wait for her."

Grade has previously given birth to at least three cubs.

Pandas are difficult to breed because females ovulate only once a year. They can only become pregnant during that two or three-day period.

Considered a national treasure, pandas were once on the brink of extinction. Today, they continue to be endangered from logging, farming, and encroachment on their natural habitat.

The Worldwide Fund for Nature 2004 census found 1,600 pandas in the wild—mostly in the Sichuan Province.
